Ep 14 - Searching for Why
Tuesday Dec 12, 2017
Tuesday Dec 12, 2017
Episode 14 is about Pete and Gretchen searching for “why” they set the goals they did in episode 13. Gretchen just couldn’t wait to talk it through. OK, no one believes that, it was all Pete.
If you get uncomfortable with a couple talking something through that they don’t necessarily agree upon, fair warning before you listen. The couple is fine by the end but there are some contentious times.
Anyway, they start out with a quick refresh of what happened over the three days since episode 13, which isn't much. There is a surprise gift Pete reveals. There is also a favorite recipe and, as promised, here it is:
This loaded cauliflower, made with butter, sour cream, chives, cheddar cheese and bacon, is the ultimate in low carb comfort food!
Loaded Cauliflower
Servings: 6 people
Ingredients
• 1 pound cauliflower florets
• 4 ounces sour cream
• 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
• 2 slices cooked bacon crumbled
• 2 tablespoons snipped chives
• 3 tablespoons butter
• 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
• salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
1. Cut the cauliflower into florets and add them to a microwave safe bowl. Add 2 tablespoons of water and cover with cling film. Microwave for 5-8 minutes, depending on your microwave, until completely cooked and tender. Drain the excess water and let sit uncovered for a minute or two. (Alternately, steam your cauliflower the conventional way. You may need to squeeze a little water out of the cauliflower after cooking.)
2. Add the cauliflower to a food processor and process until fluffy. Add the butter, garlic powder, and sour cream and process until it resembles the consistency of mashes potatoes. Remove the mashed cauliflower to a bowl and add most of the chives, saving some to add to the top later. Add half of the cheddar cheese and mix by hand. Season with salt and pepper.
3. Top the loaded cauliflower with the remaining cheese, remaining chives and bacon. Put back into the microwave to melt the cheese or place the cauliflower under the broiler for a few minutes.
The discussion takes us through the "why" of the goals set in episode 13. Gretchen reveals she is more externally motivated. Pete doesn't understand as he is internally motivated. See where the disagreement comes in? In the end, they get each other and Pete, thankfully, learns a lesson.
Pete stumbles a few times in this one which they found funny and left in unedited. Gotta be authentic!

Ep 13 - Pete & Gretchen Reveal 2018 Goals!
Wednesday Dec 06, 2017
Wednesday Dec 06, 2017
Episode 13 gets back to basics. Pete & Gretchen share an update on what’s been going on. They aren’t sure if you’ll listen to this one because there is no wine involved. The horror!
Sadly, no new reviews, so they just jump right into how the week went. Gretchen doesn’t have much in Views From the Couch but she does answer a “fan” question on reality TV.
Pete talks about his continuing struggles and his determination to overcome. The good news is that the running is going well.
The bulk of the episode dives into their goals for 2018. Look for a list soon on the blog and social media. We don’t want to spoil anything, so nothing in the show notes yet.

Ep 12 - That One Thanksgiving with a Parade of Turkeys & R Kelly
Wednesday Nov 29, 2017
Wednesday Nov 29, 2017
After a two-week hiatus, Pete and Gretchen are back!
The theme of this episode, not surprisingly, is… tangents. Including an odd Thanksgiving story involving a parade of turkeys and R. Kelly.
The couple catches up on the last two weeks, especially what happened over Thanksgiving. They go over what they did right and “wrong” and promise some recipes. NSNG/Banting/Keto was part of the celebration. To see what they come up with, like them on facebook.com/fatmanstories or follow them on Instagram or Twitter (@fatmanstories)!
They also talk about getting their first Patron donation. Thank you, Linda! Pete is really excited to get to make some swag soon. Join the party and become a Patron or wait for the FatMan Chronicles online store. What?!?! Shhhh, Gretchen doesn’t know.
The rest is about catching up and a preview of episode 13 which is all about goals. What will Gretchen come up with? Will it involve the couch? Tune in next week!

Ep 11 - Therapy Not Included
Thursday Nov 16, 2017
Thursday Nov 16, 2017
Pete and Gretchen catch up after yet another trip for her, this time to Dallas. Gretchen regales you with tales of food and fun in the Texas sun. And never fear, she has some things to tell you on the TV front.
Pete recaps what was going on with Gretchen out of town. The main part of the episode has Pete telling us about a very weird couple of days. The story should generate some discussion and proves, once again, that he may need some extra therapy.
The tangents and discussion go in all kinds of directions this week and fun is had by all!

Ep 10 - The Weight Loss/Happiness Correlation
Thursday Nov 09, 2017
Thursday Nov 09, 2017
Who would have guessed Pete and Gretchen would make it to 10 episodes?
After Pete tortures Gretchen with some hard to pronounce wine grapes, they dive right into the FMC Rewind. Gretchen claims she is getting more exercise since Pete took over her couch, then she moves on to more serious business – reality TV.
Then the couple goes into planning for Thanksgiving and trying out some NSNG/Banting recipes. Not everything works out, but they did find some gems. Planning is a key to long-term weight loss success and they really wanted to share how they are going about it!
Pete talks about how his attitude sucks. Surprising? Nah. He needs to be cleared to run soon!
More importantly, he talks about strategies to get over these roadblocks, including finding inspiration in other areas. This leads to talking about the NYC Marathon and all the awesomeness that took place.
Finally, they tackle the topic of the weight loss, happiness correlation. Does losing weight making you intrinsically happier? They agree overall on the answer. Do you?

Ep 9 - Haters Gonna Hate
Wednesday Nov 01, 2017
Wednesday Nov 01, 2017
Pete and Gretchen recorded on time and the wine is back!
Then Pete goes on a rant after receiving some feedback on a blog post he wrote called “A Fat Tub of Goo.” Is his rant justified? You be the judge.
Gretchen patiently listens and gives her two cents about the whole situation. They both acknowledge they are putting themselves out there and criticism is part of the territory. Is the note Pete received over the top or just part of what they should expect? Again, you be the judge.
After the rant is over, the couple launches into the FMC Rewind. Gretchen was traveling and tells you about what she did and how she stayed NSNG. There is a discussion over how to order a burger with no bun while on the road. There’s really only one right answer yet they each do it differently. And Gretchen’s family greeted them with a batch of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, and there is a dessert bar involved on the trip. Torture!
Gretchen counts walking around the Omaha zoo as exercise. Hills, pushing a stroller, and chasing a two-year-old – yeah, that’s exercise.
Pete talks about his recovery and continued struggles after surgery a couple of weeks ago. His weight loss continues despite the struggles and the “cheats.”
They wrap up the show talking about the concept of Intermittent Fasting. Why do they do it? Does it work? Is there science behind it? Bottom line, yes it works for them and the science is proving it out.

Ep 8 - Sabotage!
Thursday Oct 26, 2017
Thursday Oct 26, 2017
Pete and Gretchen start out with the usual FMC Rewind, featuring Gretchen's birthday celebration. Does Gretchen reveal her age? Does the lack of wine ruin the show? You'll find out.
Pete dives into how his recovery is going. Gretchen tries to hand-off her Views From the Couch but Pete deftly deflects. Then the couple talks about the big birthday party. How do they stay on track with the incredible spread of food that night? Lots of fun was had for sure!
Then it is shout out time. First up, Pete's brother, Joe. who ran another marathon. Then, lots of Sub-30 love as they talk about the Runner's World Festival. Pete may or may not cry because he wasn't there.
Finally, the FMC duo dives into the topic of sabotage, including self-sabotage. What factors are in play? Does the urge to self-sabotage impact everyone? Is it all about strength and willpower to avoid the sabotage? Gretchen even has a revelation about her journey.

Ep 7 - Wait, What Happened?
Wednesday Oct 18, 2017
Wednesday Oct 18, 2017
It was an interesting week for Pete and Gretchen. Gretchen's status as an angel and leader is affirmed once again. Pete's status as a pain in the ass took on a whole new meaning.
WARNING - This podcast episode contains subject matter that no one likely wants to hear but it is reality. Discretion is advised for younger children, people with weak stomachs, or even anyone with common decency.
Episode 8 promises to be better. It has to be.

Ep 6 - Reality, Subbers, and Where's Auckland?
Wednesday Oct 11, 2017
Wednesday Oct 11, 2017
Pete and Gretchen tell you what’s in their glass before jumping into the weekly FMC Rewind. Gretchen has a lot to say in her “Views from the Couch.” That means big reality show updates that may be more PG-13. Pete tells you about his training and an unfortunate small injury. He needs to suck it up.
The couple tells you about their first big Sub-30 meetup before the Chicago Marathon. What an incredible group of people! Pete even attempts to give a shout out to each of the Subbers that made the dinner. We'll see how he does.
Then they head to the kitchen. There have been several questions around the new eating lifestyle and they tackle how planning plays into it all.
The Topic of the Day – self-honesty and negative self-talk – has a rough start and it runs off the rails. They may not have done the topic justice, but the results are either entertaining or annoying. You’ll let them know. They are already begging you to come back for episode 7 where they promise to keep it on track. Or not. You never know with these two.

Ep 5 - The Big Reveal
Thursday Oct 05, 2017
Thursday Oct 05, 2017
Pete and Gretchen start out by letting you behind the curtains while they share what happened leading up to episode 5. Let's just say they have some work to do.
In the FMC Rewind, we learn how the week has been with exercise and eating. The segment morphs into a race recap from the Fall Colors 5K at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, IL. Did Gretchen do it? Did she train? Did she finish? Did she work out more than once this week? You'll find out!
And finally, in the Big Reveal, the couple talks about this not so mysterious lifestyle they've embarked on. Banting, NSNG, keto, fat adapted - these are the terms they explore to give you a sense of what they are doing and why. Not surprisingly, Pete used a lot of podcasts to learn about the lifestyle and he tells you most of them. They settle on talking things through while giving credit to Dr. Tim Noakes for really inspiring Pete to force (convince, beg) Gretchen to give it a try.
Disclaimer: Pete and Gretchen can barely take care of themselves and their family, so they are certainly not qualified as physicians, dieticians, nutritionists, or even someone you should ever listen to for health advice for any reason. Seriously, you've listened to the other episodes - check with your doctor before starting any new dietary plan.
