Ep 18 - Keto vs. Fat-Adapted
Friday Jan 12, 2018
Friday Jan 12, 2018
In this week’s installment, Pete and Gretchen give you their usual recap of the week. Gretchen is slacking with her “Views from the Couch” but vows to take notes and do better soon.
Pete updates you on his training and some questions FMC has received about their eating habits. With that in mind, the couple discusses the differences between keto and fat-adapted. It is not an in-depth look at both plans but rather an overview with insights into how they settled on a more fat-adapted lifestyle.
NOTE – Pete and Gretchen are not doctors, dieticians, nutritionists or even very good at explaining what the heck they are doing. Please consult with your doctor before implementing anything they talk about. They are here to help once you’ve been cleared to embark on the lifestyle!

Ep 17 - That's Random
Friday Jan 05, 2018
Friday Jan 05, 2018
Episode 17 is random. More so than usual? You be the judge.
Pete and Gretchen catch up on the last week and dive into how their goals are going just a couple of days into the new year. This week’s “Views from the Couch” is brief, but enlightening as always!
Then the couple talks about a few health-related articles. Did you know about the latest diet craze? Is it good for you? You’ll learn all about CICO.
Finally, they talk about a few recipes that have really hit home. Is anyone surprised when they talk about food at this point? Hopefully, it gives you some good ideas.

Ep 15 - The FatMan Returneth
Saturday Dec 16, 2017
Saturday Dec 16, 2017
Episode 15 was recorded on Pete & Gretchen’s 8th Anniversary, that’s how dedicated they are to the listeners. They recap their anniversary celebration weekend, or as Pete calls it, “The FatMan Returneth.” They may have strayed from the plan. There may have been donuts involved. #blamePete
What’s interesting, but not surprising, is how the couple differs in their view of what happened and how big of a deal it was. Do they get right back on track?
After remembering to introduce the wine, it is time for Gretchen’s Views From the Couch. This installment is big and includes notes because she wants to make sure she doesn’t disappoint!
Pete updates everyone on his training which means he talks about all the podcasts. And he reveals how the Chicago Marathon lottery went for him.
The couple (well, Pete) talks a bit about sugar – what has sugar? Is sugar the right fuel? Online discussions of sugar have Pete a little puzzled and he talks that through.
Finally, they talk about strategies to deal with friends and family during holiday parties with their eating plan. Gretchen seems to have a much easier time with this as she just ignores the comments. Pete, he struggles much more.

Ep 14 - Searching for Why
Tuesday Dec 12, 2017
Tuesday Dec 12, 2017
Episode 14 is about Pete and Gretchen searching for “why” they set the goals they did in episode 13. Gretchen just couldn’t wait to talk it through. OK, no one believes that, it was all Pete.
If you get uncomfortable with a couple talking something through that they don’t necessarily agree upon, fair warning before you listen. The couple is fine by the end but there are some contentious times.
Anyway, they start out with a quick refresh of what happened over the three days since episode 13, which isn't much. There is a surprise gift Pete reveals. There is also a favorite recipe and, as promised, here it is:
This loaded cauliflower, made with butter, sour cream, chives, cheddar cheese and bacon, is the ultimate in low carb comfort food!
Loaded Cauliflower
Servings: 6 people
Ingredients
• 1 pound cauliflower florets
• 4 ounces sour cream
• 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
• 2 slices cooked bacon crumbled
• 2 tablespoons snipped chives
• 3 tablespoons butter
• 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
• salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
1. Cut the cauliflower into florets and add them to a microwave safe bowl. Add 2 tablespoons of water and cover with cling film. Microwave for 5-8 minutes, depending on your microwave, until completely cooked and tender. Drain the excess water and let sit uncovered for a minute or two. (Alternately, steam your cauliflower the conventional way. You may need to squeeze a little water out of the cauliflower after cooking.)
2. Add the cauliflower to a food processor and process until fluffy. Add the butter, garlic powder, and sour cream and process until it resembles the consistency of mashes potatoes. Remove the mashed cauliflower to a bowl and add most of the chives, saving some to add to the top later. Add half of the cheddar cheese and mix by hand. Season with salt and pepper.
3. Top the loaded cauliflower with the remaining cheese, remaining chives and bacon. Put back into the microwave to melt the cheese or place the cauliflower under the broiler for a few minutes.
The discussion takes us through the "why" of the goals set in episode 13. Gretchen reveals she is more externally motivated. Pete doesn't understand as he is internally motivated. See where the disagreement comes in? In the end, they get each other and Pete, thankfully, learns a lesson.
Pete stumbles a few times in this one which they found funny and left in unedited. Gotta be authentic!

Ep 13 - Pete & Gretchen Reveal 2018 Goals!
Wednesday Dec 06, 2017
Wednesday Dec 06, 2017
Episode 13 gets back to basics. Pete & Gretchen share an update on what’s been going on. They aren’t sure if you’ll listen to this one because there is no wine involved. The horror!
Sadly, no new reviews, so they just jump right into how the week went. Gretchen doesn’t have much in Views From the Couch but she does answer a “fan” question on reality TV.
Pete talks about his continuing struggles and his determination to overcome. The good news is that the running is going well.
The bulk of the episode dives into their goals for 2018. Look for a list soon on the blog and social media. We don’t want to spoil anything, so nothing in the show notes yet.

Ep 12 - That One Thanksgiving with a Parade of Turkeys & R Kelly
Wednesday Nov 29, 2017
Wednesday Nov 29, 2017
After a two-week hiatus, Pete and Gretchen are back!
The theme of this episode, not surprisingly, is… tangents. Including an odd Thanksgiving story involving a parade of turkeys and R. Kelly.
The couple catches up on the last two weeks, especially what happened over Thanksgiving. They go over what they did right and “wrong” and promise some recipes. NSNG/Banting/Keto was part of the celebration. To see what they come up with, like them on facebook.com/fatmanstories or follow them on Instagram or Twitter (@fatmanstories)!
They also talk about getting their first Patron donation. Thank you, Linda! Pete is really excited to get to make some swag soon. Join the party and become a Patron or wait for the FatMan Chronicles online store. What?!?! Shhhh, Gretchen doesn’t know.
The rest is about catching up and a preview of episode 13 which is all about goals. What will Gretchen come up with? Will it involve the couch? Tune in next week!

Ep 11 - Therapy Not Included
Thursday Nov 16, 2017
Thursday Nov 16, 2017
Pete and Gretchen catch up after yet another trip for her, this time to Dallas. Gretchen regales you with tales of food and fun in the Texas sun. And never fear, she has some things to tell you on the TV front.
Pete recaps what was going on with Gretchen out of town. The main part of the episode has Pete telling us about a very weird couple of days. The story should generate some discussion and proves, once again, that he may need some extra therapy.
The tangents and discussion go in all kinds of directions this week and fun is had by all!

Ep 10 - The Weight Loss/Happiness Correlation
Thursday Nov 09, 2017
Thursday Nov 09, 2017
Who would have guessed Pete and Gretchen would make it to 10 episodes?
After Pete tortures Gretchen with some hard to pronounce wine grapes, they dive right into the FMC Rewind. Gretchen claims she is getting more exercise since Pete took over her couch, then she moves on to more serious business – reality TV.
Then the couple goes into planning for Thanksgiving and trying out some NSNG/Banting recipes. Not everything works out, but they did find some gems. Planning is a key to long-term weight loss success and they really wanted to share how they are going about it!
Pete talks about how his attitude sucks. Surprising? Nah. He needs to be cleared to run soon!
More importantly, he talks about strategies to get over these roadblocks, including finding inspiration in other areas. This leads to talking about the NYC Marathon and all the awesomeness that took place.
Finally, they tackle the topic of the weight loss, happiness correlation. Does losing weight making you intrinsically happier? They agree overall on the answer. Do you?
