Ep 34 - The Review and FOPO
Friday May 11, 2018
Friday May 11, 2018
Episode 34 is back to Pete and Gretchen sharing an update on what is happening in their lives. Gretchen’s “Views from the Couch” and Pete’s training are the big topics early.
Pete gives a few shout outs to those who had races the week before and goes into how heat hurt their friend, Kevin, at the Lincoln Marathon. He finishes and shows what grit is all about. Also, if you want to hear Rob Bozovich’s marathon recap, give it a listen here on Endurance for Everyone.
Then the topic shifts to a negative review the couple received. They give their response and Pete may get a little passionate. They invite honest reviews but ask that their kids are not a part of them.
Finally, within the context of the review, they talk about an interview with Dr. Michael Gervais on the Pursuit with Purpose podcast. Dr. Gervais talks about FOPO – Fear of Other People’s Opinions – and how that impacts their lives.

Ep 33 - From 400 Pounds to Marathon: An Interview with James Lacher
Saturday May 05, 2018
Saturday May 05, 2018
Episode 33 may have some sound quality issues. We are working on them and will re-release when they are fixed, but hopefully they aren't too bad and you can get through it.
The episode starts out the usual way, sans music, with some wine and Gretchen’s #viewsfromthecouch. After a brief preview of what Pete thinks is next for him, they get to an interview with James Lacher.
Four years ago, James weighed over 400 pounds and wasn’t doing much to make sure his health was on track. After getting a new job with the San Luis Obispo Transportation Authority, James used his new health insurance to explore bariatric surgery.
After undergoing the surgery, James started running, met his girlfriend, and has accomplished a ton, including recently completing his first marathon. James has an interesting story and Pete and Gretchen really dive deep with him.

Ep 32 - Race in Review | Rob Bozovich from Endurance for Everyone
Monday Apr 30, 2018
Monday Apr 30, 2018
Episode 32 is different in a few ways. First, Gretchen isn’t there from the start. Life sometimes gets in the way and their toddler didn’t cooperate. She shows up later, but, since the episodes are so close together, no #viewsfromthecouch. Settle in though because this is a LONG episode.
There’s also no wine. Seriously, what is wrong with them? Well, here’s the deal…
Rob Bozovich, the co-host of the Endurance for Everyone podcast, joins Pete and Gretchen, so the show had to get going! Rob was kind enough to be there from the start and help guide Pete through his race in review.
The first 40 minutes plus of the show are all about Pete’s incredible half-marathon at the Illinois Marathon in Champaign-Urbana, IL. He was emotional from the get go and he talks about why. Overall, the race went really well and there are a lot of details here. A written race report is coming soon because, even after all that time, he didn’t fully capture everything that happened.
Somewhere in there Gretchen joins and she’s around for the 40-minute conversation with Rob. They talk about Rob’s start in running and triathloning (is that a word??), as well as the fact that he’s a pretty big guy despite, in his words, being the runt of the litter in his family. Rob’s dedication to improving in all aspects of his athletic endeavors is incredible. We think you’ll find him as inspirational as we do!

Ep 31 - Race in Preview | What's Healthy | Hairy Backs?
Thursday Apr 26, 2018
Thursday Apr 26, 2018
The quote it back! By popular demand, Pete brings back the quote, but there is still no music (for now) because he hasn't figured out how to edit. A big thank you to everyone who reached out to help and he'll take you up on it soon!
In Gretchen's Views from the Couch, she goes into how bad the RHOA are while saying she'll still watch it. Pete presses her on this and it turns into an interesting discussion.
From there, Pete previews his upcoming half-marathon race putting his goals out there. If you want to track him, click here. He also gives a few shout outs to some listeners that have races this weekend and they are going to crush it!
Finally, Pete brings up the So This is Fitness podcast episode 84 and it leads into a discussion about what is healthy. Are there any universal truths? What should we be doing to lose weight and keep it off? Definitely give the So This is Fitness podcast a listen because it is another husband and wife with a really interesting take on what happens when you struggle. (Click here to listen.)
As the conversation winds down, Gretchen seems bored and throws in some hairy back chat. We're not sure what is going on with her, but it is always entertaining!

Ep 30 - Back and Better(?) Than Ever
Thursday Apr 19, 2018
Thursday Apr 19, 2018
After a couple of weeks off, Pete & Gretchen return with Episode 30, which brings a new era to the FatMan Chronicles with no opening quote or music. How long will it take Pete to figure out how to edit this stuff in? Well, the over/under is 6 months.
In Views from the Couch, Gretchen updates everyone on the happenings of reality TV. And she even ties in the Real Housewives to the New York Marathon!
Pete recaps his trip to Spain and the challenges he faced along the way. We get an update on his training and even a public declaration of his goals for the upcoming half-marathon.
The talk then turns to Boston. This year’s marathon saw two unlikely champs and the lessons learned were invaluable. Also, Gretchen doesn’t understand what makes the Boston Marathon great, so there is a lot of discussion around this riveting topic.

Ep 29 - Interview with Peter Bilarczyk (The Fat Adapted Athlete)
Friday Apr 06, 2018
Friday Apr 06, 2018
Episode 29 of the FatMan Chronicles features an interview with Peter Bilarczyk, owner of thefatadaptedathlete.com and alldietsfail.com.
Pete and Gretchen dive right in with Peter and forego Views from the Couch (gasp!) and any training updates. There are a few updates from Pete thrown in during the interview, but they will be back in episode 30 to give you all the insights from their lives you’ve come to expect.
The interview with Peter gets deep into a way of eating that he calls an adapted keto lifestyle, including a focus on balance while eliminating grains and added sugar. His story is compelling, having lost a lot of weight himself and teaching himself the science behind what works. Peter believes this approach can help everyone and has opened a coaching service to help people on their weight loss journey.
Be ready for some science in this one. Pete tries to jump in to help define a few things. But, never fear, Pete and Gretchen’s trademark humor is well represented throughout!

Ep 28 - The Weight Loss Struggle is Real
Friday Mar 30, 2018
Friday Mar 30, 2018
Episode 28 gets real. Pete recaps his Shamrock Shuffle 8K. Spoiler alert – he nailed it!
Then Gretchen gets into talking about the frustrations of her weight loss journey. Where is she and where does she want to go? How will she get there? What changes does she want to make?
Pete talks about his take on his weight and some terms that really annoy him. It’s easy to aggravate him, so this should come as no surprise.
Finally, Pete talks about some irrational fears. This is something that may resonate with others battling the belly!

Ep 27 - Gretchen Talks... Ultra-Running?
Friday Mar 23, 2018
Friday Mar 23, 2018
Gretchen talks women in… ultra-running? Yep!
But first, Pete and Gretchen recap their trip to Washington wine country. Without wine in front of them, the couple recounts the wine and food experiences with a group of friends in the Columbia Valley of Washington. A good time was had by all. Too much of a good time? Maybe, but all worth it.
Pete talks about his amazing 10-mile run on the Columbia River and the impact it has on his appetite. Fat-adapted or not, expending a lot of energy makes you hungry.
Finally, the couple tackles an interesting subject – are women better than men at ultra-running? The conversation is inspired by an article in Women’s Running UK called, “Why Women are Better at Ultra Running.” Gretchen recaps the article and the couple discusses the merits behind it. Pete is especially intrigued by the mental aspects as they help him gain insight into Gretchen’s thought process on goals.

Ep 26 - Our First Guest! John Harris from Endurance For Everyone!
Thursday Mar 15, 2018
Thursday Mar 15, 2018
For the first time, Pete and Gretchen are joined by a special guest – John Harris from the Endurance for Everyone podcast!
John gets to listen in as the couple talks wine and his favorite segment, Views from the Couch. John learned a lot about things he didn’t really care to know but all in good fun.
From there, they talk training, John’s background, including his battle with cancer which eventually got him to take control of his health, start a blog, and, eventually, a podcast. John’s history is incredibly inspiring. But don’t worry, there are the usual tangents and laughs.
Pete and Gretchen cannot thank John enough for being the guinea pig guest on FMC. We encourage you to check out the podcast and blog, especially if you have ever thought about doing a triathlon. John definitely lives by the show’s creed to #bebettertoday!

Ep 25 - On the Road
Friday Mar 09, 2018
Friday Mar 09, 2018
Gretchen is on the road, so the couple had to record over Skype for the first time. Pete stumbled a bit with the technology, but the episode is no worse than usual!
They don’t introduce themselves in this episode, so consider this your intro to Pete & Gretchen if you are joining the madness for the first time.
A typical episode with Views from the Couch, an update on Pete’s training, and inane chatter. The first listener question for Gretchen came through and she addresses it, giving insight into why she struggles with putting goals out there.
